Bangkok--20 Feb--Hill & Knowlton Thailand Company business direction for 2008 will focus on investing in foreign opportunities, renewable energy projects and continue Corporate Social Responsibility policies EGCO Group has announced an impressive consolidated net profit for the year 2007, ending 31 December, of 8,402 million THB - an increase of 2,386 million THB or 40 percent compared to the previous year. The EGCO Group’s business direction for 2008 will target investment in foreign opportunities, including Lao PDR, the Kingdom of Cambodia and the Union of Myanmar. The EGCO Group will also focus on the development of renewable energy projects to support the country’s fuel diversification policy. Furthermore, the EGCO Group will continue its strong commitment to social responsibility to emphasize its brand vision of “Energy for Life”. Visit Akaravinak, President of EGCO Group, commented, “EGCO Group’s business performance in 2007 met last year’s target by achieving a consolidated net profit of 8,402 million THB, an increase of 2,386 million THB or 40 percent; or 15.96 THB net profit per share. The main profit sources were from our shared profits with BLCP Power Limited since January 2007, the Amata Power Bang Pakong expansion since April 25, 2007 and Unit 1 of the Kaeng Khoi 2 since May 5, 2007.” Another key factor, Visit Akaravinak revealed, was a successful re-branding campaign last year, for which the EGCO Group has been running consistent internal and external communications. The overall result confirms that the re-branding campaign achieved its goals as set by the EGCO Group for both its internal and external targets. A survey of 1,000 interviewees in 4 regions and 5 provinces revealed that after three TV Commercials promoting the re-branding had been aired, 84 percent recognized the EGCO Group as an independent power producer committed to taking care of the environment - a significant increase from findings before the launch of the three movies which put this figure at 35.2 percent. Similarly, a survey amongst EGCO Group employees showed that 70 percent understood the campaign’s goals and were satisfied with the corporate communication campaign and activities, both internally and externally. For 2008’s business direction, Visit Akaravinak explained, “the EGCO Group will continue to follow the company’s long term plan by investing in neighboring Mekhong countries such as Lao PDR., the Kingdom of Cambodia and the Union of Myanmar, with projects that can supply electricity to Thailand. We will however also focus on investment in domestic projects in Thailand relating to renewable fuel and energy. For example, we will continue to pursue investment opportunities in prospective domestic projects using wind, waste and biomass as alternative fuel sources. The investment ratio between local and international will stand at 70:30. “The EGCO Group will also focus on power plants under construction, which are due to be completed either before their expected completion dates or on time, such as Nam Theun 2 in Lao PDR. of which its overall progress stands at 80 percent and Kaeng Khoi 2 at Saraburi province which is 99.5 percent completed. EGAT has already approved the purchase of additional power prior to the COD of Kaeng Khoi 2 Unit 2 after a successful commissioning, even though the COD for Kaeng Khoi 2 Unit 2 was originally scheduled for March 1, 2008.” Speaking on energy policies, Visit added, “Alternative energy is a top priority for the government because 70% of Thailand’s electricity generation depends on natural gas. However natural gas resources are decreasing while the demand for electricity is increasing rapidly. The EGCO Group has begun feasibility studies on alternative energy and committees have been set up to assess the potential of coal-fired and nuclear power plants. Once these types of power plants become more widely accepted by the public, the EGCO Group will be then be ready to propose the most suitable and beneficial plans to the government.” “The EGCO Group is also continuing its work on corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme,” continued Visit. “We’ve run and developed our business with regards to CSR, which covers the areas of Corporate Governance and Health, Safety and Environment (SHE) management as well as Social Development. In 2007 we were officially ranked the eighth for best corporate governance company by Finance Asia magazine. I’m also proud to say that our power plants achieved their zero accidents policy and we successfully completed fifteen social contribution projects to celebrate the auspicious occasion of His Majesty the King’s Eightieth Birthday. As a result, the EGCO Group has received positive feedback from all stakeholders including employees, business partners, shareholders, communities and press members. This year we aim to continue our CSR policy as we believe that they are the key to sustaining our long-term business and ensuring the group’s future prosperity.” About EGCO Group EGCO Group is the first Independent Power Producer (IPP) in Thailand with 14 operating plants, totaling 3,509 equity MW at present.
