Bangkok--29 Feb--DC Consultants and Marketing Communications Siam City Cement Plc (SCCC), manufacturer of Insee cement, is once again cooperating with the Chaipattana Foundation to continue the “880 Check Dams for His Majesty” project for a second year. Concerns about global warming were expressed in the project this year as the company wishes to increase public awareness of the issue and encourage people to take part in solving it. “During its introductory year, 2007, the project succeeded in promoting the importance of building check dams. This is one of His Majesty the King’s initiatives for maintaining environmental balance, and thus an ideal gift for his 80th birthday,” said Chantana Sukumanont, SCCC executive vice president for customer relations. “It has generated great interest among our staff and management, our partners, the media, students, and people throughout the country. Now, the world is concerned with global warming partly caused by the loss of the natural balance. It has caused unpredictable weather conditions and natural disasters in many countries. “This project aims to make people more aware of this problem and its impact, and to show how check dams can improve the situation by restoring our soil, water and forest resources.” Last year, 1,055 check dams were built in Chiang Mai, Nan, and Lamphun, indicating an achievement of 20 per cent beyond the original goal. These include 972 dams built from natural materials and 83 concrete dams. In 2008, SCCC plans to build another 880 check dams: 430 in San Kamphaeng, Phrao and Fang districts of Chiang Mai, 100 in Pua district of Nan, 100 Mae Tha district of Lamphun, 120 in Khao Kho district in Phetchabun, and 130 in Kaeng Khoi district in Saraburi. They will be built from natural materials, stone or concrete suitable for the geographical conditions, and appropriate materials to benefit the surrounding communities. Local residents, students, the media, and the company’s staff are taking part in the building of the dams and associated activities. “We are helping the public to understand that global warming is a matter that’s connected to us all, and that everybody who can should try to help,” said Miss Chantana. “Apart from promoting greater participation, we will also conduct research to study the impact of the project and provide information for further developments.” For more information, please contact : DC Consultants and Marketing Communications Ratchada Pasunta/Pimpailin Teeraleela Direct Line: 0-2610-2362 / 0-2610-2372
