Thai bourse adopts international standard for key market ratios

ข่าวหุ้น-การเงิน Tuesday March 4, 2008 10:51 —PRESS RELEASE LOCAL

Bangkok--4 Mar--SET The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) will calculate its market statistical ratios using the World Federation of Exchanges (WFE) approach, as well as existing ratios, starting end-March 2008. The approach will cover key market ratios, such as price/earnings (P/E), price/book value (P/BV) and dividend yield. Both new and existing ratios will apply to SET- and Market for Alternative Investment (mai)-listed companies. The data will be posted on SET’s website at www.set.or.th starting from the end of March, SET President Patareeya Benjapolchai said. Currently, these ratios are calculated differently to other markets. For example, in assessing market P/E, SET only includes stocks posting net profit in the past 12 months, resulting in a lower P/E than other markets. As of February 2008, the Thai market P/E was in a range of 11 — 12. “The new ratio calculation will better reflect the market in comparison to others as all firms in the SET Index will be included. As a result, the Thai market’s P/E will be about 15 — 17 - closer to those of Asian markets, such as Japan, Hong Kong and Korea. This will further enhance the Thai market’s attractiveness to investors,” Ms. Patareeya added. The SET index and statistics study group considered ways to bring the Exchange’s statistics into line with the WFE approach. The new and existing ratios will both be publicized for about a year on www.set.or.th. Furthermore, five-year historical ratios calculated on new and old basis will also be available, SET Senior Vice President - Information Services Dept. Santi Kiranand said. The new P/BV ratio will contain all securities in the SET Index and will include shareholders’ equity of listed firms’ subsidiaries. Dividend yield calculation will take in all securities in the indices, but not all listed common stocks. For more information, please call SET Call Center 0-2229-2222.
