ROLLS-ROYCE WINS CONTRACTS TO POWER TWO OF EUROPE’ S LARGEST PAPER PLANTS

Bangkok--7 May--Hill & Knowlton Rolls-Royce gas turbines have been in use in Thailand for a quarter century Rolls-Royce has received two new contracts from paper manufacturers in Spain and Portugal for RB211 aero-derivative gas turbine-powered electrical generating sets to be used in co-generation plants, thus building on an already strong install base in Thailand. The units are also covered by ten-year TotalCare(R) service agreements. Europac, one of Europe’s largest paper producers, has ordered one of the RB211-GT61 units, rated at 31MW, for installation at its Due?as paper mill in northern Spain. It will join three other Rolls-Royce units to become part of a plant providing both the electrical and thermal energy (super heated steam) required to support a planned increase in paper production at the site. The Rolls-Royce units are so potent and efficient that the plant will be able to export its excess power back to the Spanish national grid. A planned increase in paper production by Europac’s wholly-owned subsidiary Portucel Viana at its Viana do Castello paper mill in Portugal has resulted in a second order for an RB211-GT61 unit for this site, where one RB211 is already operating. Both RB211-GT61 units are fitted with a Dry Low Emissions (DLE) combustion system to suppress emissions, a requirement that is now mandatory on all electrical generating equipment installed throughout Europe. Both of the new natural gas fuelled units will be expected to operate continuously, as any disruption to the production process can affect the quality of the paper product. Rolls-Royce gas turbines have been used in Thailand since 1984, when PTT selected Rolls-Royce for its first gas separation plant in Rayong. Today, PTT has five gas separation plants and continues to use Rolls-Royce gas turbines, including an RB211 installation. In addition, PTT operates five more RB211 units offshore on production platforms in the Gulf of Thailand and has already placed orders for two more RB211 units for its Ethane Separation plant in Map-Ta-Put province. Dan Pedley, Managing Director of Rolls-Royce (Thailand) commented: “Whether it is in Spain, Portugal or Thailand, Rolls-Royce RB211 gas turbines have proven their reliability and efficiency at producing power under the strictest of environmental constraints. With emissions far lower than traditional coal-fired plants, PTT’s Rolls-Royce-powered plants lead the way in best practices and this helps explain why PTT chose our units yet again to power their 6th gas separation plant in the province of Map-Ta-Put.”Notes to editors: 1. There are over 140 Rolls-Royce gas and diesel engines installed in co-generation plants in Spain and over 50 gas turbines in the Iberian Peninsula serving the oil and gas industry and the industry sector. 2. During 2007, 14 Rolls-Royce K and B series gas engines with a total power of 94MW were sold to operators in Spain and Portugal. 3. Seven RB211 gas compressor sets are already installed on the Europe Maghreb gas pipeline at two compressor stations along a line that exits North Africa near Tangier before it goes under the Straits of Gibraltar and into Spain on the outskirts of Tarifa.
