Bangkok--10 Sep--Aziam Burson-Marsteller The motorcycle market in August has continued to grow with total registrations of over 143,000 units and an 8% increase in the family motorcycle category due to its economy, which meets the needs of today’s consumers. Honda, as the market leader, has encouraged users to consider the fuel efficiency of motorcycles as a viable alternative by launching 2 new PGM-FI models and mapping out a marketing activation to approach a wide range of target consumers. Teerapat Chivapong, Sales Director of A.P. Honda Co., Ltd., said the number of motorcycle registrations during August totaled 143,095 units, compared to 136,838 units last year, representing a 5% increase, or 6,257 units. This result continues the 7 consecutive months of market expansion that started in February 2008. This growth of family motorcycles was driven by the fluctuation in oil prices and the changing behavior of today’s users, who are concerned more about fuel saving capability. Although oil prices have declined they are still expensive in real terms. Family bikes therefore became the consumers’ alternative choice that best solves their problem and effectively reduces fuel use. Family motorcycles became very popular and took 53% of the market share with registrations of 76,506 units in August or an increase of 8% compared to the same period of last year. For other categories, A.T. motorcycles (Automatic Transmission) had a 43% market share and sales of 61,110 units, only 2% up from last year. Family-sport models earned a 3% market share and sales of 3,859 units, with a 12% decline in growth rate. Sport models had a 1% market share, with a 10% decline in growth rate and sales of 884 units, while other categories recorded sales of 736 units. Seeing the consumers’ keen focus on economy, Honda recently launched 2 new motorcycle models; CZ-i 110 and Click-i that are equipped with its latest “PGM-FI” (Programmed Fuel Injection) technology. During September the Company will hold an activity called “PGM-FI Bikes Show” to engage more consumers in Bangkok and nearby areas and stimulate the motorcycle market. The accumulated registrations during the 8 months, from January to August, totaled 1,176,096 units or a 5% increase compared to the same period last year.
