Bangkok--17 Feb--Francom Asia The popular Raimon Land International Rugby Tens tournament returns to Bangkok this month, highlighting Thailand’s stature as a destination able to attract large events with a record number of teams and players arriving from all over the world for 2009. The Bangkok International Rugby Tens, which takes place on February 21-22 at the Bangkok Pattana School, is now firmly established as one of the largest international sporting events in the Kingdom boasting a host of rugby stars. Raimon Land is once again the main supporter of the event since its 2006 inception, reflecting the luxury property developer’s firm commitment to position Thailand as the region’s top sporting destination and place Bangkok at the centre of Southeast Asian rugby. Raimon Land Chief Executive Officer, Nigel Cornick, said: “Watching the tournament get bigger year after year shows that Thailand is earning its rightful place on the international rugby stage.” The 2009 tournament has locked in a field of 32 teams from Thailand and around the world. Mr Cornick also praised the participants’ commitment to the sport on the field and noted the growing camaraderie among the local and visiting players off it. “The Tens reflects an invigorated surge in rugby’s popularity among young and veteran players alike, while showcasing Thailand’s social and sporting lifestyle,” Mr Cornick said. Event Founder and Chairman of the Bangkok International Rugby Ten's Committee, Eddie Evans, also pointed to the annual tournament’s continued success. “This year we have around 650 players coming in from all over the globe including many ‘stars’ like South Africans Bobby Skinstad and Robbie Fleck,” he said. “We have also taken steps to instil a family-friendly atmosphere at the Tens with a range of youth competitions for boys and girls.” This year will see an increase in the number of youngsters taking part, which is a cornerstone to Raimon Land’s involvement in the tournament. “This competition is very valuable for our youth and should be supported by the community, as it provides Bangkok with a solid foundation for developing local rugby talent,” Mr Cornick said.
