Mr.Mitsuhiro Sonoda, President of Toyota Motor Thailand Co. Ltd., officially opened the Toyota booth at the 30th Bangkok International Motor Show (BIMS) at BITEC and announced the company’s vision in developing environmentally-friendly and energy-saving vehicles while introducing the 1/X and A-BAT concept vehicles that set new benchmarks in saving the environment. Product highlights at the Toyota booth include the Camry 2.4V Extremo, Corolla Altis SS-I, Fortuner Full Time 4WD Sportivo 2 and Fortuner 2WD Aperto.
Toyota is participating in the BIMS with a 1,500-square meter booth area under the theme of “Hybrid World Around You” which reflects the advancements of hybrid technology and leadership in the Thai automobile market. The company is also presenting environmentally-friendly vehicles and specially-tailored production models that respond to every customer needs.

Benefits of hybrid vehicles

1/X
The 1/X was first shown at the Chicago Auto Show 2008 and redefines from its very root, the idea of what it means to be environmentally considerate. Among its attributes, the vehicle, with a design that aims to harmoniously coexist with people and society, weighs only “1/Xth” of other vehicles in its class.
The 1/X offers the same amount of interior space as the Prius Hybrid, but offers two times better fuel efficiency as well as 420 kilograms less weight (about one-third of the Prius), thanks to the use of lightweight and high-strength carbon-fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) throughout the body frame to ensure superior collision safety, while allowing narrower pillars for better visibility.
The roof of the 1/X is made from organic plastic that is environmentally-friendly, resulting in better heat insulation, lower carbon dioxide emission, a brighter cabin as well as low exterior noise.
The cabin of the 1/X features four extra lightweight seats made from fiber polyester that has been knitted in a three-dimensional pattern for better seating comfort. The material acts as a spring that offers a soft feel for passengers.
Power comes from a compact hybrid system located under the back seat comprised of a plug-in lithium-ion battery pack and a 500cc FFV (Flexible Fuel Vehicle) engine that weighs only one-fourth compared to the Prius hybrid powertrain system. This allows the 1/X to boast a fuel consumption of only 150 miles per gallon.

The A-BAT compact truck concept
The A-BAT concept, with its modern styling and high versatility along with environmentally-friendliness, was first unveiled at the North American International Auto Show 2008 in Detroit.
The A-BAT concept vehicle is built on a unibody platform for car-like handling when navigating city streets and smooth ride quality for highway trips. The lightweight package coupled with the Toyota Synergy Drive technology has been designed to offer excellent fuel economy.
Translucent solar panels in the top surface of the instrument panel capture sunlight and convert it into energy, showcasing its “Green” character. It integrates truck features with car fundamentals for an efficient and modern package.
The A-BAT’s unique aerodynamic exterior integrates Toyota’s “Vibrant Clarity” design philosophy into the exterior by keeping the design forward-looking, crisp and functional.
The concept’s unique look is a combination of the larger body surfaces, intersecting tight surface planes, crisp lines and a trapezoidal profile. The 19-inch wheels at the vehicle’s corners also create a tough and ready stance.
The A-BAT features a four-foot bed, but has more flexibility than a standard pickup truck. A translucent roof panel slides open to allow for tall cargo. When the pass-through midgate is folded down into the cab, the bed lengthens an additional two feet, while an open tailgate provides another two feet of bed length.
Although the A-BAT has a rugged and spirited exterior, the interior designers worked to create a modern look.
They created a balance between the colors and fabrics that are both bright and vibrant, and captured an urban-rugged feel with the energetic and geometric qualities.
The application of lightweight construction materials such as carbon fiber and aluminium to the instrument panel, console and seats helped increased structural rigidity while reducing mass.
The rigid, yet sculptured center console houses a portable power pack that offers both AC and DC current for a wide variety of applications.
The four-seat A-BAT offers numerous seating and storage configurations.There is also a retractable portable navigation unit with a 7-inch diagonal screen and Wi-Fi internet. Other advanced features include a port for portable device assistance synchronization and a hard drive for digital music.
Both the driver and passenger have a large multi-information display screens on the instrument panel to view the status of high-tech gadgets, HVAC and audio settings.
The solar panels on the dashboard recapture energy from the sun to assist in the charging of the navigation unit, portable power pack and the backlit information displays.
The Toyota A-BAT is the next evolution of the compact truck that is utilitarian, has an original profile compared to other trucks. It represents a practical and fun-to-drive package that reflects Toyota’s concern for environment sustainability.
