Minister Porntiva pushes for higher export earning through the signing up of an MOU between DEP and eBay.

Bangkok--13 May--Aziam Burson-Marsteller The Department of Export Promotion presses on with its project to enhance the potential of the Thai exports through online market. Upon its taking up of a policy initiated by Mrs. Porntiva Nakasai, the Commerce Minister, it initially signs up an MOU with eBay today to train the Thai exporters to market their products through online system. The training will be open to the Department’s Export List and Trade Mart members as well as new entrepreneurs. It will also come with special privileges including fee waived for the first 100 product items made available on eBay and a 25% transaction fee discount for the first 100 transactions made on PayPal. According to eBay, 77 billion Baht of the Thai jewelry, ornaments and watches were traded on eBay in 2008. Mr. Rachane Potjanasuntorn, Director General of the Department of Export Promotion, Ministry of Commerce, discloses that the Department has signed up an MOU with eBay, the World’s #1 online marketplace, today as part of its “MOC enhances the Thai business’ potentials in online market with eBay” project, a policy initiated by Mrs. Porntiva Nakasi, the Commerce Minister, to support the Thai export sector to expand their businesses to the world market through a new export alternative, namely an e-commerce system. The project will be open to all export-oriented entrepreneurs, businessmen as well as thousands of the Department’s Export List and Trade Mart members to actively participate in trainings, seminar and workshops to enhance the skills on how to conduct their businesses on eBay as well as to receive in-depth consultations provided throughout the course. In this occasion, Mr. Oliver Hua, Chief Operating Officer, eBay Greater China and Southeast Asia, discloses that “It has been such a great honor for eBay to receive such a strong support from the DEP. Under a long term strategic cooperation, both organizations will complement each other strength through the synergy of their knowledge, expertise and resources which will render in the growth and prosperity of the export e-commerce in Thailand.” Mr. Hua also discusses about the growth potentials of export products from Thailand that “According to export statistics by the DEP, it is found that jewelry and ornaments is one of the few industries that still enjoys further growth amidst the current economic slowdown. In 1Q09, jewelry and ornaments generates about 140 billion Baht in export income to the country implying a growth rate of 106.3% QoQ.” The demand for the Thai jewelry and ornaments is constantly rising in the world market and is highly popular on eBay. In 2008, the Thai jewelry, ornaments and watches generates a total sale of 77 billion Baht on eBay. As an incentive for the Thai export businesses to use eBay as their trade platform, eBay is pleased to announce a waive of their fees for the first 100 product items made by the members of this project and a maximum discount of 25% to the first 100 transactions made via PayPal on eBay. “Given eBay’s strong operations in 39 countries, I am confident that eBay will be able to help foster the growth of the e-commerce business in Thailand.
