SCAD, the volunteer group working to help Thailand’s stray dogs has rehomed street dog ‘Santa’ in the US, and he becomes the 100th street dog to start life afresh in North America!
For rescued Santa, named because he was abandoned outside SCAD’s centre on Christmas Eve, luck changed when Lori and Aaron from rural Connecticut spotted him on www.petfinder.com, an American adoption site that SCAD links to. “It was quite a mission but very much worth the effort to see the 100th Thai dog go to a loving, forever home in USA” stated Wendy Edney, SCAD’s international rehoming manager. "Each time an animal is rehomed, whether in Thailand, Europe, the US, or Canada, we all truly celebrate, as it means we can accommodate another needy stray.”
SCAD has rehomed an average of 15 dogs a year in the USA and Canada, and has recently expanded their international program by adding the Netherlands to its overseas network. Locally, over 200 dogs and 300 cats have found permanent homes through SCAD, bringing the total number of animals placed to over 600. 60-70% of local dog adoptions are to expat families living and working in Bangkok, but as educational outreach to local communities improves, SCAD hopes to see an increase in the number of Thais adopting. “As more Thai families learn of the huge potential that ex-street dogs have to become excellent and intelligent family pets, we are optimistic of he numbers of adopting Thai families growing.” said Edney.
