Bangkok--16 Jul--Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit The Living Room at the Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit is acknowledged as one of the finest live jazz venues in Bangkok. Renowned for staging some of the world’s top international jazz acts, the accolade is further emphasized this August when The Living Room welcomes the distinguished Preservation Hall Jazz Band. The outstanding jazz outfit will take to the stage from August 18th — 20th for three memorable nights of truly inspiring and soulful sounds. The Preservation Hall Jazz Band derives its name from Preservation Hall, the venerable music venue located in the heart of New Orleans’ French Quarter, founded in 1961 by Allan and Sandra Jaffe. The band has traveled worldwide spreading their mission to nurture and perpetuate the art of New Orleans Jazz. Whether performing at Carnegie Hall or Lincoln Center, for British Royalty or the King of Thailand, the band’s music embodies a joyful, timeless spirit. Under the auspices of current director, Ben Jaffe, the son of founders Allan and Sandra, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band promises jazz fans an uplifting musical experience in the intimate surroundings of The Living Room. Spin magazine said of a recent performance, ”...Jaffe jolts tradition by inviting unlikely musicians such as spiky-haired punk crooner Clint Maedgen to play, traditionalists be damned,” while The Los Angeles Times simply said, “Preservation Hall keeps it’s jazz hot!” The Preservation Hall Jazz Band began touring in 1963 and many of the band's charter members performed with the pioneers who invented jazz in the early twentieth century including Buddy Bolden, Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong, and Bunk Johnson. Over the years, band leaders have included the brothers Willie and Percy Humphrey, husband and wife Billie and De Pierce, famed pianist Sweet Emma Barrett, and Wendell and John Brunious. These founding artists and dozens of others passed on the lessons of their music to a younger generation who now follow in their footsteps like the current lineup. Jazz fans can expect stellar performances from Ben Jaffe, the band’s creative director and tuba player, Mark Braud on trumpet and vocals, Charlie Gabriel on clarinet, saxophone and vocals, Clint Maedgen on reeds and vocals, Joe Lastie, Junior on drums, Freddie Lonzo on trombone, Walter Payton on bass and vocals, and Rickie Monie on piano. The appearance of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band at The Living Room is a musical coup for lovers of the jazz genre and undoubtedly the gig of the year!
