A well-spent day for cleanup, over 1,500 volunteers from Coca-Cola system Thailand, business partners both government and private sectors, individuals, students and volunteers in community sacrificed their day off to gather for ‘Coca-Cola International Coastal Cleanup 2009’ to help rid the beach of trash and debris. It was a meaningful cleanup activity with cheery spirit and this year the cleanup took place in two provinces at Haad Chao Sam Ran and Liam Pak Bia in Petchburi and Kamala Beach in Phuket. The cleanup was also a mini outing for some family who involved their members for such a meaningful cleanup along 10 kilometers stretch of coastline in both provinces. Even the native star Teen-Sarawut Pumthong has put his efforts and put on plastic gloves for the trash picking. This year a total of 6,351.3 Kgs of litter was picked up.
Mr.Jorge Garduno, General Manager of Coca-Cola (Thailand) Limited said ‘it is the 14th consecutive year of The Coca-Cola Global Company to support the Ocean Conservancy, based in U.S.A. for International Coastal Cleanup. The cleanup is scheduled for every third Saturday in September each year and has become the largest volunteer of its kind as more than 400,000 volunteer worldwide participated last year. For Coca-Cola Thailand, this is the 5th year of our support as a belief in preserving water resources under RAKNAM program.’
Mr.Veera Akaraputhiporn, Vice President of Corporate Affairs for ThaiNamthip Limited said ‘the company has long geared towards the environmental-friendly issue and allocated budget around 200 million Baht a year to support these types of activities. This coastal cleanup is also one of activities to make a positive impact in the community and for the environment aspect. Picking up trash specially along the seashore area might be fun, but there is no joke if you see the amount and volume of trash that are collected. From the statistics over 6.4 million tons a year has dropped into the ocean which causing a significant pollution issue for natural resources. We do not only pick up the trash, but we record every single collected item with standardized data cards. This data later on will be submitted to Ocean Conservancy and forms the basis of annual trash index — country-by-country, state-by-state and etc. The data report with a more in depth analysis will be a helping hand to identify and stop polluters in the near future.’
Mr.Isarapong Sangmanee, a mayor of Provincial Administrative Organization of Petchburi said ‘for our municipality we set up a fund on trash bank or ‘trash for sale’ for students in school. Students do not just grab trash and throw away, but they can find the treasures out of them. We teach them to the pick trash, sorting out and sell them. At least it will enhance their education initiatives and create greater awareness when they’re still young. We even set up our environmental fighters group from students and residents in the area and will organize environmental activities on June 5th and June 12th. When the Coca-Cola system Thailand comes for this cleanup activity, it also gives us an opportunity to work in our backyards and be a part of this special activity.’
Trash doesn’t fall from the sky. A large percentage of these trash is being contributed by human activities which is very irresponsible in nature. This behavior is causing a great deal of destruction and a destroyed ecosystem. So, start showing your support and concern for our beach and our world from now.
