The Embassy of Portugal is presenting Grammy nominee and world’s leading Fado songstress Mariza on October 8, 2009 as part of this year’s International Festival of Dance & Music. Her return to Bangkok has been eagerly awaited by audiences since her last soul-tingling appearance.
Fado traces its modern history to the Portugal of 1820s and is often described as a kind of Lisbon blues. Fado speaks of saudade (loosely translated as ‘nostalgia’ in Portuguese) and its nuances — longing, happiness, sadness, love and pain. It is the call of the Portuguese soul.
All of Mariza’s previous albums — Fado em Mim (2001), Fado Curvo (2003), Transparente (2005) and Concerto Em Lisboa (2006) — went Platinum, and her current album Terre (2008) looks set to go the same way!
She has received recognition for her talent with a number of awards, including the prestigious Medaille de Vermeil from Paris Academy of Arts, Sciences and Letters, and the Order of Henry the Navigator awarded by President Jorge Sampail of Portugal.
