United Nations Marks 60 Years in Thailand

Bangkok--21 Oct--UNISBKK HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, Prime Minister to address UN Day observances; exhibition to open at CentralWorld The United Nations will mark 60 years in the Kingdom of Thailand and the growth of Bangkok as a regional hub for the UN system with an exhibition at the country’s largest shopping complex and official observances at the UN regional headquarters in the Thai capital. The multi-media exhibition by 18 UN agencies* opens at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, 22 October, and will be on display for four days. The exhibition will cover six decades of the United Nations serving the Asia-Pacific region, kicking off the celebration of Organization’s 64th birthday Saturday. The opening ceremony will be held at the Eden Zone on the 2nd floor of CentralWorld, which can be accessed when entering the building from the skywalk linking the shopping complex to the skytrain system. This is the third consecutive year CentralWorld has hosted the UN Day exhibition. Senior UN officials and representatives from the UN Association of Thailand (UNAT) and CentralWorld will deliver remarks at the opening. There will also be musical performances. The official UN Day observance will take place on Monday, 26 October, at the United Nations Conference Centre (UNCC) in Bangkok. HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn and Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva are scheduled to attend. HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn will preside over a flag raising ceremony and deliver an address. Also speaking will be the Prime Minister and Noeleen Heyzer, United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP). The ceremony will also feature performances by noted Thai pianist Nat Yontararak, the Satri Wat Rakhang School marching band, and children from the American School of Bangkok. UN staff members will perform Thai classical music. The United Nations was formally established on 24 October 1945, after a majority of its founding members ratified a treaty setting up the world body. The anniversary of that event has been celebrated as United Nations Day since 1948.
