eBay, the world’s largest online marketplace and the leading online shopping destination for unique holiday gift ideas, revealed that sales relating to Halloween amounted to 4.3 million US dollars, or approximately 144 million Thai baht, in the month of September. It was also noted from past trends that buyers typically start shopping for Halloween items on eBay.com in early August, with the strongest buying activity in the middle of October.
“Prior to any festive celebrations like Halloween, we see spikes in sales of related products on eBay about two weeks before the actual day,” said Allis Ghim, Director at eBay who oversees Southeast Asia. “eBay presents huge opportunities for entrepreneurs to increase their revenue by selling in international markets such as in the US where festive periods like Halloween and Christmas are highly celebrated events.”
Total number of listings on eBay.com for the month of September amounted to over 450,000, with almost half of the listings closing successfully with a sale. Most popular words used by shoppers to search for Halloween-related items, in addition to “Halloween”, are “costume”, “witch”, “pumpkin” and “black”. Popular product categories for Halloween items listed by eBay sellers are Clothing, Shoes and Accessories, Collectibles and Crafts. On average, the price of Halloween items sold on eBay is about 17 US dollars.
Interestingly, the most expensive item sold on eBay.com in the past month was a “Complete Halloween haunted house” which went for 6,001 US dollars, or approximately 201,000 Baht. Closer to home, Thai sellers have also started to take advantage of the peak Halloween shopping season. Most of the products offered by Thai sellers are related to people’s desire to dress up for parties and events, such as vampire capes, thematic costumes and latex masks.
