BIG+BIH October 2009 meets target. The Department of Export Promotion, the Ministry of Commerce, announces the six-day event attracted more than 135,000 visitors and generated purchase orders that will be worth well over Bt450million. The highest number of visitors and trade delegations came from Japan. The United States, Malaysia, Taiwan, and Singapore sat next on the list in terms of visitor number. China, meanwhile, emerges as a new interesting market for Thai entrepreneurs.
Mrs. Srirat Rastapana, acting Director General of the Department of Export Promotion, reveals that more than 135,000 people visited the Bangkok International Gift Fair & Bangkok International Houseware Fair (BIG+BIH) October 2009 in six days. Of them, 15,000 visitors showed up on trade days while 120,000 turned out on public days.
Sales from the BIG+BIH October 2009, the 28th event of its kind, will soar over Bt450million. Up to Bt135million transactions were made on spot on trade days alone, and purchase orders to be executed within one year will likely reach Bt235million. On public days, the latest BIG+BIH recorded Bt82million sales. The most popular products are home-decorative items, gifts, premiums, ceramic ware, household products, furniture, glassware and plastic products.
On trade days, the highest number of foreign businesspeople came from Japan, followed by the United States, Malaysia, Taiwan, Singapore, China, France, Australia, Britain and Vietnam respectively. On the number of trade delegations, the top ten countries were Japan, the United States, China, Taiwan, Italy, Australia, Germany, India, Vietnam, and France respectively. The total number of trade delegations to the BIG+BIH October 2009 stood at 537, an increase of 130 per cent when compared with the last year's event. The highest number of pre-registered visitors to the BIG+BIH October 2009 came from Malaysia, Japan, Singapore, Taiwan, Britain, Australia, Hong Kong, the United States, France, and Indonesia respectively.
Of all foreign visitors to the BIG+BIH October 2009, about 67 per cent have expressed an interest in visiting the next BIG+BIH because they find Thai products have good quality, unique designs, customer-oriented features, and environmentally-friendly materials. As many as 67 per cent of the exhibitors at the BIG+BIH October 2009 have stated that their participation is good for their business, as it has allowed them to introduce new products and get new customers.
It should be noted that the BIG+BIH October 2009 has seen a higher number of Asian visitors, particularly those from China. When compared with the event last year, the number of visitors from China jumped by 20 per cent. At the latest BIG+BIH event, 51 trade delegations from China attended the fair.
One of the main highlights at the BIG+BIH October 2009 was the Design Excellence Award (DEmark) 2009 exhibition. It featured 59 award-winning items from 39 companies. Initiated under the Prime Minister’s Export Award scheme in 2008, DEmark is granted to products with outstanding designs. The prime minister has personally presented the award to the winners, noting that DEmark is an effective tool to differentiate and add value to great Thai products in the international market.
Inside the Design Hall of BIG+BIH October 2009, 119 companies occupied 352 booths to display their interesting new products. In the BIG Toys Design 2009 zone, more than 30 new toy designs were put on show for the first time. Equally interesting was the Zone for the Gift & Home Decorative Design Award 2009: Artwork project where over 300 cool artworks were displayed. Throughout its entire space, the BIG+BIH October 2009 had 625 exhibitors manning 1,664 booths.
The next BIG+BIH event in April 2010 will be held under the “Soul and Style of the Orient” theme. It will run from April 20 to April 25 next year. Business negotiations are welcome between 10am and 6pm on trade days, which will run from April 20 to April 23. The event will be open to the members of the general public on April 24 and April 25 between 10am and 9pm. The 29th BIG+BIH in April 2010 will span over 45,000 square meters at Bangkok International Trade & Exhibition Centre (BITEC) in Bang Na. The venue is strategically located with an easy access to the Suvarnabhumi Airport. Up to 600 companies are expected to operate 1,600 booths at the BIG+BIH April 2010, which will likely attract 13,000 visitors on trade days and 78,000 visitors on public days.
