EBAY ENTERS THE HOLIDAYS SEASONS WITH POSITIVE ONLINE SALES

Bangkok--14 Dec--Aziam Burson-Marsteller eBay, the world’s largest online marketplace, reported a surge in online shopping on Cyber Monday (November 30th), outpacing Black Friday (November 27th) in total transactions by 35 percent. Cyber Monday refers to the Monday immediately after Black Friday, the ceremonial kick-off of the holiday online shopping season in the United States. On both Cyber Monday and Black Friday, shoppers did the most searching on eBay between 8:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. EST, or 8:00 am and 9:00 am in Bangkok, suggesting that consumers may be window shopping during the day and finding the best deals online from the convenience of their homes. The hottest find for the holiday season was “Zhu Zhu Pets,” which continued to be the most-searched item on eBay.com from Thanksgiving Day (November 26th). Approximately 30,000 of these toy hamsters and related items were sold on eBay on Black Friday and Cyber Monday combined. Big ticket Black Friday and Cyber Monday items purchased on eBay.com included a vintage Irwin Yacht, which sold for US$5,000, and a 2006 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren purchased for approximately US$200,000. “With close to 200 million live listings at any given time globally, eBay offers incredible deals this holiday season on virtually anything anyone may want for Christmas,” said Oliver Hua, Chief Operating Officer, eBay Greater China and Southeast Asia. In Thailand, eBay has also seen positive sales growth in the month of November. Total gross merchandise volume grew by 17% while total number of items sold grew by 19% in the past year. “Thais are not only active in selling to but also buying from potentially 89 million eBay members worldwide. The top three categories that Thais shopped in during November included “Cell Phones and Accessories”, “Computers” as well as “Jewellery, Gems and Watches”, for which the number of items sold grew by 148%, 100% and 86% respectively,” added Oliver.
