HP StorageWorks P2000 G3 Modular Smart Array System
Overview
The new HP StorageWorks P2000 G3 Modular Smart Array (MSA) System enables small to midsize customers to effectively support rapid business growth with a flexible, easy-to-use and affordable storage area network (SAN) solution.
The HP P2000 G3 helps customers scale their storage environments through increased drive capacity. It also improves application availability and performance with the latest 8-gigabit (Gb) Fibre Channel (FC) controller technology. The P2000 G3 can be used for enterprise departmental storage or to easily connect remote offices, allowing the business to share data and make decisions faster. Additional customer benefits include:
- Faster application performance through an 8Gb FC controller. The 8Gb FC functionality provides a data transfer path that is two times faster than previous models, enabling SAN environments to keep up with demanding workloads or applications.
- Improved data management and flexibility with a FC/iSCSI Combo controller option that offers both 8Gb FC and 1Gb iSCSI ports. Data can be transferred through the 8Gb FC ports to keep up with the needs of a full FC SAN, while the iSCSI ports can be used by departments with lower performance needs.
- Increased data protection with Remote Snap, a new replication capability that is built into HP P2000 G3 systems. This software builds on the P2000 G3’s standard snapshot capability to provide reliable disaster recovery by replicating data to a second P2000 G3 array. New Volume Copy software automatically captures local copies of stored data, while the standard 64-snapshots license helps ensure critical data is accessible in the event of failure.
- Improved scalability with a 50-percent increase in small-form-factor drive count and a 60 percent increase large-form-factor drive count. The array can support up to 57.6 terabytes (TB) in SAS-based configurations or 192 TB in SATA.
The HP P2000 G3 ensures investment protection by allowing customers who have an existing HP MSA2000 G1 or G2 FC Serial Attached SCSI or iSCSI model to upgrade their systems by simply replacing the controller. Customers can also easily transfer data from previous generation MSAs to the P2000 G3 through a “data in place” process that migrates data securely.

HP StorageWorks P4000 G2 SAN Solutions
Overview
The new HP StorageWorks P4000 G2 SAN Solutions deliver high data availability, in both virtualized and physical environments, through its unique Network RAID functionality. Together with a new energy-efficient architecture, the P4000 G2 SAN reduces customer’s risk of downtime and data loss with a better total cost of ownership.
Each minute of downtime can cost a business thousands of dollars. To protect against downtime, the P4000 G2 SAN offers redundant components and hardware RAID to guard against disk drive failures. In addition to these features, the P4000 G2 SAN includes an innovative Network RAID functionality that goes one level above hardware RAID by delivering data protection at the network level against major power outage, complete system or site failure. With the P4000 G2 SAN, storage is never the single point of failure for a company’s IT infrastructure.
The P4000 G2 SAN is a key part of implementing a Converged Infrastructure to ensure an easy-to-manage, agile IT environment. The solution helps deliver Virtual Resource Pools, which are virtualized collections of shared server, storage and networking capacity that can be utilized on the fly and repurposed to meet any business demand.
Achieve efficient application availability
The P4000 G2 SAN is built on a scalable architecture that provides the highest levels of data availability. Together with the new SAN/iQ software, the P4000 G2 SAN delivers the following benefits:
- Improved capacity utilization by up to 50 percent over existing P4000 SAN solutions with Network RAID that reduces the amount of storage space consumed.(1)
- Increased storage performance with the new Best Practice Analyzer. The Analyzer constantly monitors and compares the SAN environment with lab-tested best practices. If the SAN environment needs fine tuning, it sends an alert regarding potential adjustments that can be made to drive optimal performance.
- Simplified data management through new application integrated snapshot, remote copy, and clone capabilities that ensure reliable capture and recovery of data. In addition, customers can automate these functions, further reducing administrative time.
Gain better flexibility and value with P4000 G2 solutions
The P4000 G2 SAN lowers the price per gigabyte by up to 43 percent over previous versions while ensuring higher disk drive reliability. Other benefits include:
- Improved, easier-to-manage scalability with a pay-as-you-grow P4500 Capacity SAN that starts with 60 terabytes (TB) of available storage space at less than $1.50/GB. The P4500 allows customers to scale in 12 TB increments as opposed to competing solutions which require 48 TBs. This significantly enhances capacity utilization and allows customers to grow their storage at more reasonable rates. The solution also offers data protection through thin provisioning, snapshots and clones.
- Increased reliability and access speed with 7.2K revolutions per minute (RPM) SAS disk drives to data at the same cost and capacity as SATA.
- Enhanced flexibility with the new P4000 Unified NAS Gateway that allows customers to store and manage both files and database or “block” data.
- Simplified management of converged server and storage environments with HP’s Integrated Lights-Out 2 (iLO2) remote management software for all P4000 G2 SANs and HP ProLiant servers. Customers can lower energy costs up to 10 percent with the latest server power management technology.(1)
