Dusit District Office in conjunction with Wat Devarakunchorn Varaviharn welcomes everyone to the “Devarakunchorn Temple Festival B.E 2553 (2010)”. In this festival, you will experience the Thai way of life that is bound with the Buddhist religion and Thai culture. You will also learn more of various valuable aspects from historical sites, architectures, paintings and sculptures, all of which are precious artifacts of the Devarakunchorn Varaviharn temple. Open the Gate to the Path of Dhamma: the Path of Thai Life Paying respect with flowers and incenses to the Buddha image in a standing pose “Pahng Hahm Samut”(position of calming the ocean ) located in the Triple Gems open hall (Ho Pra Ratana Trai). Then, entering the “Jaturamuk” pavilion, a Buddha image Hall or “Viharn” where revered Buddha images are housed. In the Viharn you will have an opportunity to worship the Buddha’s relics, gild Buddha’s footprint, worship the images of “Phra Uppakut” which will ward off devils-inspiring lucks, “Phra Seewalee”, Ganesha, the Buddha’s Doctor “Jivaka Kumar Bhacca”. Make merits by offering the Order, rice, electricity, drinking water, and purchase amulets for your protection and prosperities. Flowers and incenses are provided free of charge at the Triple Gems open hall in front of the temple. Devotees can make donations there.
Enjoy the Monastery view: Witness the Beauty of Siam Culture- In the temple, pray for auspicious protection and present the “Trijieworn” outer robes to “Phra Buddhadhevarajapatimakorn” -the main Buddha image of the temple. Outside the temple, with flowers and incenses (without actually lighting) in hands, you can make a triple respectful clock-wise circumambulation around the temple for the glory of life. At 07:00 p.m, listen to the chanting of holy stanzas for auspicious protection.
At the back of the main temple, locates a little temple where you can visit and pay respect to 9 different artistic Buddha images received from His Royal Highness Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn and receive blessing with auspicious holy water.
At Sala “Suchada” (Thai-style canopy) close to the temple, view the historical film of 9 years’ renovation and restoration of Wat Devarakunchorn Varaviharn into its current elegant presence, with the support and guidance from Phra Thepkunakorn, the Abbot of Wat Devarakunchorn Varaviharn . You will witness how the temple has transformed itself far beyond any imagination since Phra Thepkunakorn has come in charge of his current position.
Around the temple, there are many canopy tents in which traditional Thai way of livings are demonstrated. You will have a chance to see each presentation and each show closely. What you will experience is the atmosphere of traditional Thai culture. You will be able to try your hand at some Thai artistic handicrafts such as making flesh flower garlands and many more. All the demonstrations and presentations are performed by students from Technology Rajamangala University of Technology Ratanakosin, Pohchang Academy of Art Campus and the Faculty of Home Economics Technology, the Rajamangala University of Technology Phra Nakhon. The demonstrations can be viewed from 05:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. You are welcome to take a close look of all activities.
Besides the above activities, at the front area of the temple, there will be various stage shows of traditional Thai cultures. The activities include talk shows on traditional Thai way of life in the olden times that will flash your imagination back to the genuine beauty of ancient cultures, various cultural shows such as traditional Thai instrumental music performances, cultural dances performed by Thai youths and many more. All programs can be viewed everyday of this three-day festival. On June 5th , view ‘Sepa Pa-kowma Thai’ (traditional Thai live singing), June 6th - enjoy the local traditional Thai singings, and June 7th view traditional Thai live paintings using crayon along with Thai music instrumental ‘Ra-nad’ (Thai Xylophone) performance. All shows will be performed from 05:00 p.m. onward.
Enjoy Theatres of Siam — in this festival, we arrange high caliber of rare traditional Thai shows for you to enjoy free of charge at the stage in front of Dhevaratthammasala building :
1. Light and sound multimedia spectacle “Rattana Mani Bukfah Devarakunchorn”. You will learn the story of the temple’s significant restoration works in becoming the present serene majestic state, proclaiming the temple’s past establishment as the Royal Monastery under the guidance of Phra Thepkunakorn, the Abbot of Wat Devarakunchorn Voraviharn. The show will be the combination of traditional and contemporary Thai dance with light and sound effects.
2. Traditional Thai performances. You will see many rare traditional Thai performances on the stage in front of the temple.
June 5th — enjoy ‘Nattagam Aranga SriSiam” show and “Khon” (traditional mask dance) in the “Ramayana”, episode “Kap Pipek” (Chasing Pipek) June 6th - view Thai puppet theater performance from ‘Joe Louise Puppet Theatre’ in the “Ramayana”, episode “Jaab Nang” (Get the lady) and “Sri Chaiyasing”, and ‘Li-kae’ performance (lay people’s theatre) from “Sit Hom-Huan” group, episode ‘Yo Pa-Klin’
June 7th - view ‘Lakorn Nai’ (Traditional Royal Thai Performance) in “Inao”, episode “Ya Ran Tam Nok Yoong” (Ya Ran is catching the peacock) and Thai puppet show in the “Ramayana”, episode ‘Nang Roi’ (floating lady). All will be performed from 06:00 p.m. onwards.
3. Thai atmosphere with Thai music- enjoy and have a relax evening in the atmosphere of Thai culture with Thai instrumental music.
Many Scrumptious Thai Foods — enjoy special fair-trade community products from various communities in Bangkok. The products include art work and crafts, artifacts that reflect Thai-being, food, beverages and many more which can be purchased at the parking area in front of the temple.
Furthermore, you are welcome to walk around and see the beauty of the architectures in Wat Devarakunchorn Voraviharn such as the magnificent mural in the temple, ‘Jaturamuk Mondop’(Four porticos), Thai Canopy Hall, a group of contemporary-Thai buildings in ‘Pan-yha’ beautiful architecture style and the “Golden Teak” museum.
