STANDARD CHARTED KL MARATHON 2010 EXPECTS TO GET 18,000 RUNNERS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD UNDER THE THEME “RUN AS ONE”
Standard Chartered KL Marathon has just welcomed, in less than a month since registration commenced, its 5,000th runner. As registration kicks into a high note, the race, themed “Run as One”, promises to invoke team spirit in communities through health and fitness and will draw individuals from all walks of life — internationally and locally. Hosted by title sponsors, Standard Chartered Bank Malaysia Berhad for the second time, this year’s race will flag off and end at Dataran Merdeka on the 27th of June, 2010.
Organized and promoted for the first time by Golazo Sdn. Bhd., City Council of Kuala Lumpur (DBKL) and LD Sports Sdn. Bhd., the race aims to garner the participation of 18,000 runners and promises to be a truly Malaysian sporting event of world-class standards.
“The Council acknowledges the importance of a healthy Malaysia and how marathons are slowly becoming showpiece spectacles of international cities worldwide and with this in mind, we are proud to stake our support of the Standard Chartered KL Marathon 2010. This is truly a wonderful platform to promote healthy living and provides for a unique setting for people across all ages to gather as one and indulge in a common passion for running. We are also excited about our participation in organizing this prestigious event and look forward to a great race,” said said Muhammad Sidek B. Khalid, Director of Culture, Art, Tourism & Sport of DBKL.
Participants registered thus far are mainly from Malaysia, which demonstrates the continued interest and commitment of runners in the country. It is also expected that an international lineup, coming from as far as Tanzania, Norway, United Kingdom and within the region, Hong Kong and Indonesia will fill up the numbers slowly but surely in the coming weeks much like last year. Currently, international participants from 22 different countries represents 10% of the 5,000 — a higher percentage compared to the total international participation registered at the inaugural Standard Chartered KL Marathon last year!
“The KL Marathon 2010 will be big on rewards with a total of USD 100,000 in prize money up for grabs. Winners in the open category stands to bag USD17,500, while the local winner is guaranteed USD2,500. Being a uniquely Malaysian sporting programme, we are also extending privileges for Malaysian runners with a guaranteed prize pool up to 5th place! What is really exciting, is to note that we are seeing an increased level of interest and participation internationally and regionally”, enthused Wes Sakai, Race Director, Standard Chartered KL Marathon.
With various categories to suit the running preference and needs of a wide array of participants, this year’s KL marathon will include a new category for “veterans” and feature a new list of benefitting charities to be supported by funds collected from “Run for a Cause” and the “Corporate Challenge”.
This year’s run will also showcase a revised and improved route, further showcasing the uniqueness of Kuala Lumpur with its historical landmarks and famous tourist attractions.
