Designers in Asia Pacific invited to enter “ZEQUENZ Design Contest 360? Creative Life”
The Department of Export Promotion (DEP) in association with Zenith Enterprise Co Ltd is holding a journal cover design contest in a bid to build a creative society for Asia Pacific.
Residents of Thailand or any other country in Asia Pacific, 18 years of age and above, are invited to enter “ZEQUENZ Design Contest 360? Creative Life” and then stand a chance to win prizes worth more than 200,000 Thai baht.
“The ZEQUENZ Design Contest gives Thai designers and their counterparts within Asia Pacific an opportunity to express themselves through regional design competition and expand their creative potential,” said DEP Deputy Director-General Piramol Charoenpao.
“It is ideally relevant to the Government and DEP’s campaign for creative economy, which will no longer focus on low-cost production and price competitiveness — but creativity and value creation to help the country survive, and win global competition.”
She also said, “One of the key success factors is that Thailand speeds up developing human resources in the design industry so that they could adapt themselves to the changing economic environment.”
“We believe, by participating in the Contest, Thai designers will be inspired to create great works and provided with a great opportunity to grow as an active part of the region’s creativity development circle.”
Zenith Enterprise’s Managing Director Sinee Damrongkitkarn said, “This Contest follows our successful journal writing competition, The Story of Life, which was held last year. The feedback exceeded our expectations with more than 2,000 entries being submitted from across the country. To continue our social responsible and human resources development initiatives, this year’s focus is on encouraging entrants to transform their creative ideas into stunning designs. In addition, we have widened the scope of the Contest from national level to regional level to allow international designers to join and share the experience.”
To be eligible for the Contest, each entrant must be a resident of Thailand or any of more than 50 countries within Asia Pacific. The entrant must also have 18 years of age and above.
Design must be specially created for the ZEQUENZ 360? collection. The required size is A5 (14.8 x 21 cm), using PU as material and one or two techniques specified by the Contest, including deboss, hot stamping/foil, silk screen, die-cut, and embroidery/stitched work. It must visually encapsulate the concept of 360? Creative Life. One entrant can submit a maximum of three entries.
The judging criteria involve inspiration, creativity, commercial value and points accumulated from the Popular Vote. Representatives from DEP and the Office of Product Value Development, TCDC, members of the media and private organizations also join the panel of judges.
One of the judges for the Contest, Dr. Netpreeya Chumchaiyo, Director of the Office of Product Value Development, pointed out that it was delighted to take part in an inspiring activity like this. “It is associated with our commitment to encourage and support Thai exporters, especially in areas of product design because it is a master key to product development and value creation as well as brand building.”
“It is found from surveys conducted domestically and internationally in recent years that the design competency of Thai designers is second to none and has become widely recognised around the globe. So, what we have to do now is to reinforce our strength. The Contest is a good example of the effort to broaden the learning perspective of Thai designers. They could learn more and share with others in the region. And once their creativity has been optimised, it will be a driving force for the country’s export growth.”
The winner of the Grand Prize will receive cash of US$2,500, while two runners-up will receive cash of US$1,000, along with Certificate of Honor for both. The Popular Vote winner will get cash of US$500. Each of them will also receive one set of ZEQUENZ journal special edition, plus a complimentary one-year membership from I-DESIGN magazine and Asia Book.
“As the manufacturer and exporter of ZEQUENZ-branded journals, we would like to invite all interested persons to enter the Contest. Not only to win the prizes, on top of that all entrants will learn more about the creative thinking process and get their creative power boundlessly energized,” said Ms Sinee.
Contest entries can be submitted from 12 June through 10 August 2010. Shortlisted entries will be announced on the Contest’s website with the online voting opened between 1 and 30 September 2010. The winner announcement and award presentation ceremony will be held on 25 November 2010.
