Lecturer, writer, and radio personality, Ann Mahaguna has recently been appointed the second Thai Refugee Ambassador for the US Committee for Refugee and Immigrants (USCRI). The appointment took place at the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Thailand (FCCT). The title was presented by a Country Director, Mr.Veerawit Tianchainan.
Each year on June 20th, the United Nations has designated as World Refugee Day. The U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants - Thailand (USCRI - Thailand) organize the World Refugees Day event to send message from USCRI President Ms. Lavinia Lim๓n and appoint the second Refugee Ambassador of Thailand, Ajarn Ann-Mrs.Chatchanit Musigchai Mahaguna.
According to the 2009 Global Trends report produced by UNHCR, this world has up to 43.3 million people worldwide forcibly displaced due to conflict and persecution and they are considered as refugees, returnees, stateless persons or internally displaced persons (IDPs)ion refugees. USCRI head office in New York and it’s Thailand division dedicated to it’s mission to address the needs and rights of persons in forced or voluntary migration worldwide by advancing fair and humane public policy, facilitating and providing direct professional services, and promoting the full participation of migrants in community life. Furthermore, this year USCRI seeks collaboration with the Thai government in developing and improving the quality of life of the people who resides near the 9 refugee camps area near the Thai-Burma borders.
In this appointment days, many VIP guests from many sectors such as private companies, universities, NGOs, and media came together to witness the second Refugee Ambassador appointment and to help spread awareness of USCRI’s project to improve the human qualities both in Education and in Health around the borders. One of the highlights of her speech is “In this modern world, All men are “not” created equal. But if you are a part of a human race, you should be able to live like one and be respected as one.” She pledged to do her best in this new role to help increase the standard of living of refugees and the Thai people near the borders of Thailand and Burma so that they can take back the dignity of being human and build their own hopes and dreams as first-class citizens in any country they resettle.
