Nobel Laureate Professor Amartya Sen will deliver a lecture on Peace, Violence and Development in Modern Societies at the UN Conference Centre in Bangkok on Tuesday, 20 July 2010 from 14:00 to 15:30 hours.
His address is part of the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) Distinguished Person Lecture series. The Lecture will be introduced by Dr. Noeleen Heyzer, UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of ESCAP, and followed by an open discussion.
Professor Amartya Sen, one of the most renowned contemporary social thinkers, is Lamont University Professor and Professor of Economics and Philosophy at Harvard University. His research has made substantive contributions to a range of areas, including poverty and famine, human development, social choice, welfare economics, gender inequality, political liberalism, violence and peace, and development. He is also author of numerous books on economics, philosophy and social development. Among his latest books are Identity and Violence (2006) and The Idea of Justice (2009). He is also a trustee of Economists for Peace and Security (EPS).
Professor Sen, the 1998 recipient of the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences, was also listed by Time Magazine as one of the 100 most influential persons in the world.
