Mitsubishi Motors Drives Sustainable Electrification Development Beyond the Vehicle

Bangkok--24 Dec--Mitsubishi Motors When Mitsubishi Motors unveiled the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV for the first time in 2012, it was not just another model in its SUV line-up. The plug-in hybrid was the spearhead of Mitsubishi Motors' electrification strategy, and is one component in an electrification ecosystem designed to provide sustainable energy solutions. The other component in the ecosystem is DENDO DRIVE HOUSE. Showcased at Geneva International Motor Show in March 2019, it is the next stage in Mitsubishi Motors' electrification strategy. DENDO DRIVE HOUSE ('DENDO' means 'electric drive' in Japanese) is the culmination of Mitsubishi Motors' ambition to drive the world with electricity. DENDO DRIVE HOUSE is a package of household systems comprising Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, a bi-directional charger, solar panel and household battery. The entire solution is sold as a one-stop shopping service that incorporates everything from sales and installation to post-sales maintenance. In simple terms, DENDO DRIVE HOUSE makes it possible to use power generated by the house to charge vehicles and conversely for the vehicles to supply power back into households. DENDO DRIVE HOUSE automatically goes through different phases of generating, sharing and storing, depending on requirements. Typically, in the morning when demand for power is low, electricity generated by the solar panel is used to charge the home battery and Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Once the battery is full, the solar panel continues to generate electricity during daytime for use in the home. In the evening when solar energy is weak, energy stored in the house battery will be used to power the home. It reduces electricity bills and fuel consumption. If Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is still parked and connected, it enables to supply power to the home via a bi-directional charger. In emergencies resulting in blackouts, the home battery and Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV are capable of supplying power. Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is capable to supply energy to homes using its 13.8 kW battery. The vehicle is also capable of providing up to 1,500 W of AC power through the outlets inside Outlander PHEV. That is enough to power appliances including a coffee maker and rice cooker or charging an electric bicycle without bi-directional charger. Together with the DENDO DRIVE HOUSE, the benefits of the ecosystem to its occupants are multiple. The household and PHEV battery can still be charged at night when power costs are at its lowest. Furthermore, it helps owners to be less dependent from the power grid and most importantly, it is environmentally-friendly and sustainable. With this ecosystem, Mitsubishi Motors projects how the vehicle is a part of a residential power generation infrastructure, and demonstrates its investment in key electrification technologies towards a future with sustainable energy. With millions of electric vehicles slated to hit the roads in the coming decade, growth of household battery systems, albeit at a more moderate pace, and a steady move towards decarbonization, DENDO DRIVE HOUSE combines automotive and household battery power to allow for more rapid and widespread deployment and adoption of such systems, while delivering significant cost benefits and allowing customers to be a part of a low-carbon society. DENDO DRIVE HOUSE is specifically designed with Mitsubishi Motors' customers in mind, encouraging and supporting the use of renewable energy and giving back to the grid. It is designed to optimize the best aspects of the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV and home battery, with priority given to reliability and efficiency. Mitsubishi Motors has started limited sales of DDH in Tokyo Japan from October 3, 2019. This is the very first sales of DDH in global, and MMC is planning to start its sales in overseas markets.
