ตามที่มาเลเซียได้จัดการเลือกตั้งทั่วไปครั้งที่ ๑๔ เมื่อวันที่ ๙ พฤษภาคม ๒๕๖๑ ซึ่งพรรคร่วมฝ่ายค้าน Pakatan Harapan (PH) ภายใต้การนำของตุน ดร. มหาธีร์ โมฮัมหมัด ได้รับชัยชนะการเลือกตั้ง และต่อมาเมื่อวันที่ ๑๐ พฤษภาคม ๒๕๖๑ ตุน ดร. มหาธีร์ โมฮัมหมัด ได้รับการโปรดเกล้าฯ จากสมเด็จพระราชาธิบดีแห่งมาเลเซียให้ดำรงตำแหน่งนายกรัฐมนตรีมาเลเซียคนที่ ๗ นั้น พลเอกประยุทธ์ จันทร์โอชา นายกรัฐมนตรี ได้มีข้อความสารแสดงความยินดีต่อตุน ดร. มหาธีร์ โมฮัมหมัด ในโอกาสดังกล่าว โดยมีข้อความ ดังนี้
On behalf of the Royal Thai Government and the people of the Kingdom of Thailand, I have the honour to extend my sincere congratulations to Your Excellency on being re-elected as the seventh Prime Minister of Malaysia and the Pakatan Harapan on the decisive and historic outcome of the 14th General Elections.
Thailand and Malaysia have long shared close neighborly relations, enhanced by exchanges of high-level visits and people to people relations over the past sixty years. Relations between the two countries during your term as Prime Minister of Malaysia have grown in many areas, including the establishment of the Joint Commission for Bilateral Cooperation which has served as a key mechanism in steering bilateral relations until the present. I am confident that the cooperative relations between Thailand and Malaysia will continue to be promoted under your leadership.
The Royal Thai Government looks forward to working closely with the Government of Malaysia in further strengthening and deepening bilateral relations for the mutual benefits of the two countries and peoples.
