Ten years ago television screens across the world flashed harrowing images of the aftermath of the Indian Ocean Tsunami whichhit the coasts of Asia-Pacific. Today a new video released by the UnitedNations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP)looks at work done to fill the gaps in disaster prevention, risk reductionand warning systems which contributed to the huge loss of life that day.
The five-minute video, produced by the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union withsupport from ESCAP, examines the ESCAP Trust Fund for Tsunami, Disaster andClimate Preparedness and the steps taken to build an effective regionaldisaster preparedness mechanism. Broadcasters are invited to show the pieceeither in whole or in part.
Also included with the package are short sound bites with Ms. Shamika N.Sirimanne, Director, Information and Communications Technology and DisasterRisk Reduction Division, ESCAP on the region's general level ofpreparedness for a similar disaster, and the importance of regionalcooperation in existing and future initiatives.
