Bangkok--5 Jun--SET
The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) and 12 listed companies joined “Thailand Corporate Global Road Show 2007” during May 27 - June 3, 2007, at the invitation of Credit Suisse Securities (Thailand). SET executives met with the senior management of various funds and fund managers from 75 institutions—31 in Singapore, 25 in London, and 19 in New York. These institutions control total assets of approximately THB 17.5 trillion (about USD 500 billion). The road show presented information on current Thai economic and investment conditions, the capital market development plan, and listed company information, SET President Ms. Patareeya Benjapolchai said.
The promotion’s purpose was to keep foreign institutions updated on the Exchange’s plans and clarify the current political and economic situation in Thailand. The presentations provided information directly from senior executives of SET and listed companies. Furthermore, it was an opportunity to promote financial products, such as exchange-traded funds and SET50 Index Options, both scheduled for launch in Q3/2007.
Aside from their interest in the Thai capital market development policy and listed companies, foreign institutions were also keen to know more about liquidity improvement, direct market access for institutions, linkage with other regional exchanges, corporatization trends, possible listing of large firms, and opportunities to meet with smaller market capitalization firms.
Foreign institutions acknowledge that the Thai market has a low average price-earnings ratio, making shares attractive, and that several listed companies had sound fundamentals and produced high dividend yield. Foreign institutions showed most interest in Banking, Property Development and Energy, and the 12 listed companies participating were from these sectors, Ms. Patareeya added.
“Enabling foreign institutions to gain credible and factual information directly from senior executives benefits both the institutions and the Thai market,” Ms. Patareeya said.
Concerning the ruling of constitutional court to dismiss a political party, SET reassured foreign institutions that the Thai market successfully weathered greater political storms over the past year. As a sign of positive investment conditions, it should be noted that from January until June 1, 2007, foreign investors were net-buyers with THB 74,786.71 million (about USD 2,155.24 million) in the Thai market.
