Bangkok--5 Jul--SET Thailand Futures Exchange PCL (TFEX) reached a record 9,894 contracts on July 3, 2007, the highest daily trade since inception. During H1/2007, TFEX had a daily average volume of nearly 3,000 contracts. This all bodes well for the introduction of options trading at the end of the year. “Total trading value on the day was THB 5,743 million and open interest at the end of the day was 10,787 contracts,” TFEX Managing Director Mr. Kesara Manchusree said. The surge was supported by foreign inflows and increased investor interest generally. Daily average volume in H1/2007 was 2,882 contracts, a 139% rise from the 1,204 last year. It is notable that, since June 1, 2007, the daily average has been 5,509 contracts or THB 2,976 million. Analysis of investor group reveals a similar ratio to last year, with trading by foreign institutions a little higher at 23.6% from 19.2% previously. However, the proportion of local institutions remained at 27%, while local retail trading decreased marginally from 52.9% to 49.2%. The five TFEX members with the highest turnovers were, in order, KGI Securities (Thailand) (16.95% market share), Trinity Polaris Futures (12.23%), Kim Eng Securities (Thailand) (9.72%), Bualuang Securities (8.49%) and Phillip Securities (Thailand) (6.91%). There were 6,304 derivatives trading accounts operating in total. “On October 29 TFEX will launch SET50 Index Options and expects a good response from investors. Currently, we are educating the market about the product through regular training sessions and the online trading competition, TFEX Futures Camp Challenge 2007, which provides practical experience in options trading,” Ms. Kesara added.
