Bangkok--11 Jan--SET Thailand’s Market for Alternative Investment (mai) will acquire 12 to 15 new listings in 2008. It also expects that after the mai Matching Fund Co., Ltd. has been established, at least five venture capital (VC) funds will be set up over the next three years. These funds will work with about 40 companies, boosting market capitalization by about THB 10 billion (approx. USD 300.30 million). In 2007, mai-listed firms raised THB 2.2 billion (approx. USD 66.01 million) through the market, including THB 1.48 billion (approx. USD 44.40 million) by 10 currently listed firms. This year’s new listings will contribute about THB 6 to 8 billion to overall mai market capitalization. If mai-listed firms have continued growth, total market capitalization will reach THB 60 billion by end-2008. The first new listing for 2008 will be Dimet (Siam) PCL, which lists on January 21, mai President Mr. Chanitr Charnchainarong said. Subject to Securities and Exchange Commission approval, the mai Matching Fund Co., Ltd. will be operational by end-Q1/2008. “The matching fund will attract local and foreign institutions and stimulate ‘multiplier’ funding opportunities in the primary market. Once these VC-supported firms have developed, they will grow and further contribute to the capital market. Similar cases in other markets demonstrate that about 30 — 40% of listed firms are VC-backed,” Mr. Chanitr added. “mai’s business plan for 2008 emphasizes education and research. In the past year, there were about 300 research projects dealing with mai stocks, with about 100 of these being financially supported by mai. Research is both an important information source for investors and marketing strategy for mai,” Mr. Chanitr stated. Marketing and educational activities in 2008 will include mai@Yaowarat and the mai Stock Focus seminar. For foreign investors, there will be a road show to Singapore in Q1/2008. During 2007, mai showed favorable growth and returns. As at December 28, 2007, the mai index was 272.37, an increase of 78.94 points or 41% over end-2006. Total market capitalization increased by 75%, from THB 21.81 billion (approx. USD 654.36 million) in 2006, to THB 38.27 billion in 2007 and daily trading turnover averaged THB 339 million, spiking 200% on the THB 113 million in 2006. In 2007, there were six new listings raising funds of THB 770 million. At end-2007, there were 54 listed securities on mai-- 48 listed firms and six warrants—with market capitalization of THB 38.27 billion. Among these, were 10 companies with over THB 1.0 billion in market capitalization and another 10 with THB 500 — 1,000 million.
