A three-year-old slum child named Benz was abandoned by his parents and somehow ended up living alone in extreme degradation and sleeping among pigs in the slaughterhouse market of Klong Toey. Months later, when social workers found Benz, he was severely malnourished with life-threatening infections.
Nursed back to health at his new home in Mercy Centre, Benz is now a normal, mischievous five-year-old boy, a master of the scooter and an asset to his team on the soccer pitch with plenty of friends at home and in kindergarten.
Benz’s sad story is one of the many that have been passing through the doors of the Mercy Centre since 1976 into the care of Father Joe and Sister Maria for survival. The Centres greatest challenge never changes, that is, to ensure the children, who often come to the Mercy Centre after experiencing enormous infancy and childhood deficits, are each able to be children once again on their way to leading a fulfilling family life in adulthood.
Habitat Thailand would like you to help put a smile on the faces of over 500 children who enter into the care of The Mercy Centre every year. This year Habitat is encouraging customers to buy a Christmas Care Bear and blessing card and hang in onto the special Christmas tree in-store and all Care Bears will be donated to the shelter for street kids, four orphanages, a hospice, a home for mothers and children with HIV/AIDS, a 500-pupil kindergarten, to help put a big smile onto the faces of those children who really need it.
The Christmas Care Bears are on sale in-store for Bt 290 and you can write your own Christmas wish, knowing that it will be going to a child who can turn to their Care Bear whenever they really need a hug and a smile. The best Christmas present you can give anyone.
