Khun Piyawadee is a carrier of beta-thalsaaemia while her husband is a carrier of haemoglobin E. When Khun Piyawadee was three months pregnant with no obvious explanation.
"I was tols by a doctor that my child would have a 2 per cent chance of being affected with thalassemia," explained Khun Piyawadee. "We knew that thalassemia is a chronic and awful disease. Affected babies need blood transfusions and regular transfusions and regular medical supervision. We couldn't stand knowing that our baby would be sick," she said.
Khun Piyawadee and her husband duly underwent genetic counselling with Superior A.R.T After consulting with doctors and scientists at the centre about PGD and PCR and the chances of having a healthy baby, they immediately decided to use the IVF-PGD-PCR technique.
"IT is worth trying if you really want to have a baby. But as I have many health problems, it took me almost a year to get pregnant." Khun Piyawadee added.
Khun Piyawadee and her husband now have one-month-old twins. Next year, They plan to have another child.
Thalassemia is a major public health problem in Thailand. According to data from the Ministry of Public Health, about 30 per cent of people in Thailand are carrying the gene of this silwnt killer disease. It is estimated that over 10,000 babies with different types of thalassemia are born in Thailand every year.
