ข่าวทั่วไป Friday January 16, 2009 15:30 —PRESS RELEASE LOCAL

Bangkok--16 Jan--Francom Asia Premier luxury property developer, Raimon Land is once again supporting the prestigious Phang-Nga Bay Regatta later this month, one of the most scenic events on the Asian sailing circuit. The 12th Phang-Nga Bay Regatta is being held on January 27-30, with six classes of competition over four legs. The race is a sporting showpiece to show the Kingdom and the world the high-end tropical lifestyle available in Thailand. More than 300 sailors and 60 yachts are expected to compete during the regatta that begins at the new Ao Por Grand Marina at the north-east end of Phuket and heads north to the top of Phang Nga Bay past the famous ramparts of Koh Phansak, the Koh Hong Group of islands and James Bond Island. The regatta will then run south to the secluded island of Koh Yao Noi before heading west to Railay Beach in Krabi and through the open waters of Phang Nga Bay and under Koh Yao Yai to Phuket on the final day of racing. Raimon Land Chief Executive Officer, Mr Nigel Cornick, said the regatta was a sporting showpiece for southern Thailand and it was important to support the event as a tourism attraction and economic boost for the south of the country. “Thailand is one of the best places in the world for sailing and is an integral stop during the Asian yachting season. This regatta is perhaps the most spectacular in the Kingdom. We are happy to participate to ensure its success.” Phang-Nga Bay Regatta President, Ms Caroline Payen said this year’s fleet would be one of the strongest ever competing for the six trophies. “This is always a special event for sailors in Thailand. The regatta is hugely popular because unlike other regattas, it follows a course with a different stop-over each night. This has proved very popular with sailors, and then of course, there is the scenery which has made the region famous throughout the world.” Ms Payen said. There are six divisions in the regatta. The bulk of the yachts (22) are in Racing, Cruising Divisions A and B. Other divisions include the very popular Fire Flies, the Darwin Sunsail and Multihulls. Yachts taking part this year come from Thailand, Malaysia, Malta, Singapore, France, Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. Many of the Thai registered yachts are crewed by foreigners who fly in for the race. Ms Payen says this is excellent for the local Phuket economy as many bring friends and relatives, stay locally and then explore the area after the regatta is over.
