Bangkok--20 Jan--Unithai
Recently, The Unithai Group and Kasetsart University have signed a formal memorandum of understanding for an educational collaboration to develop competency in human resources for the Thai maritime industry.
Signing the document on December 19 at Kasetsart University in Bangkhen, Bangkok, were Mr. Arthit Pratoomsuvarn, Director of the Unithai Group, and Assistant Professor Chaiwat Chaikul, the Deputy Rector of Kasetsart University’s Sriracha campus in Chonburi province. Senior representatives of both parties witnessed the event.
Mr. Arthit pointed out that the maritime industry plays a vital role in supporting the country’s economic development.
“The shipping industry helps reduce transportation costs for importers and exporters,” he noted. “But at present Thailand is still short of competent people to serve the industry, such as naval architects, shiprepair and offshore engineers. As a result the nation is at a disadvantage when competing internationally.
“Significantly,” Mr. Arthit said, “each year the country spends about a trillion baht hiring experts from overseas for the industry. Aware of this fiscal impact, Unithai is pleased to collaborate with Kasetsart University in developing the competency of Thailand’s own human resources, so that we can match international standards.”
The Unithai Group is a leader in providing services covering the entire range of the industry’s core business interests, from shipping, logistics and container terminals to shipbuilding, shiprepair and offshore engineering.
Kasetsart University is recognised as one of the country’s best institutions of higher learning and has established related curriculum and resources to support the maritime industry.
“Bilateral cooperation between Unithai and Kasetsart University will contribute to national economic development,” Associate Professor Chaiwat said, “in particular helping the nation save some 50 million baht per year in training costs spent on improving competency.”
The key features of the memorandum of understanding are the collaboration on resources development, an exchange of knowledge and workshop training. It includes provisions covering environmental concerns as well, in particular the conservation of marine life.
The collaboration will also provide additional opportunities for Unithai staff members’ families to study at the university in related fields.
