The Joan & David, from the United States, Spring/Summer 2009 collection shows a stylish look that upholds a smart and sophisticated mood to dressing. It is feminine and romantic with a city-chic edge, contrasted with a bold tribal urbanism and pops of summer colour. The return to tailoring extends from Fall/Winter but heavy lace and tweed makes it a perfect transition to Spring 2009. Urban Safari, Oriental and Victorian White themes reflect the runway trends this season, but remain accessible and wearable. The new collection is available now at Central Chidlom’s 2nd floor, The Emporium’s 1st floor and Siam Paragon’s 1st floor.
Urban safari offers perfect career options with cardigans in textured spring cotton and soft crepe skirts to match. Novelty tweed jackets brings a contemporary alternative to wearing the suit, either teamed with a tulip skirt or pleated pants in new silhouettes. The multi-colour tweed such as the strawberry and tangerine melange brings a refreshing and colourful touch to Spring 2009.
Reflecting the runway trend, there is an oriental influence in the collection this season evident from the cap-sleeve shift dress with kimono belt to the floral border print dress that comes in combinations of black and deep cherry. Heavy satin dresses up any look by the fall of the draping and shine of the fabric in an array of dresses. Another elegant option is the pleated trouser which comes in a new silhouette with a tapered leg and a hint of volume on the hips. Colours range from cameo to lipstick and deep cherry.
For the weekend try a European sportswear style for the ultimate comfortable luxury. Boxy shaped jackets, tops and an unlined shift dress are made in breathable muslin linen and handkerchief linen. Or simply replace a jacket with an oversize cardigan for a casual yet chic look. Earth tone colours are key, which runs through to the ethnic-inspired collection as well. Here neutral colours are contrasted with black to create tribal graphic prints. Red/chilli and brown are also essential colours that spice up the collection, such as the long vest in chilli when teamed with a pair of black trousers. Parachute-shaped tunic with a graphic border detail also offers an ethnic-inspired relaxed option.
Taking neutrality further into the summer, white on white plays a dominant part in a Victorian style dressing that is fresh, clean and crisp. Embroidery and fringe detailing is essential whether on long skirts or sundresses conjuring a romantic feel. The selection of butterfly-sleeve tops, kaftan shirts and longer tanks worn with these pleated skirts shows a feminine and young side. The square neckline tops in antique beige and cr?me are also smart picks that compliments the summer look with a more vintage feel.
