Bangkok--26 Mar--PC & Associates Consulting Google accepting student applications from now until April 3 Google today announced the opening of the application period for university students who wish to participate in the Google Summer of Code? 2009 program. Google is working with 150 mentoring organizations and will fund approximately 1,000 student projects in 2009, the fifth year of this program. Student applications will be accepted until April 3, 2009. Students who wish to join the Google Summer of Code (GSoC) should visit http://code.google.com/soc/ for more information. Program updates can also be viewed on the Google Open Source Blog at http://google-opensource.blogspot.com. The Google Summer of Code is the company’s flagship program that matches university students interested in programming with international open source organizations. The program’s goal is to increase the world’s supply of open source software while providing young computer programmers with inspiring, meaningful summer jobs or extracurricular activities. Over the past four years, the global program has seen some spectacular results: nearly 2,500 students from nearly 100 countries have been paired with over 2,500 mentors from industry to academia, millions of lines of source code produced and over USD15 million in funding provided to open source development. “We are particularly excited by the social ties and industry exposure our student participants get through the course of the program,” said Leslie Hawthorn, Google Open Source Team and GSoC program manager. “We've connected students and mentors in different countries around the world and hope to get university students from even more places, including Thailand, into the Google Summer of Code community this year.” About Google Summer of Code Launched in 2005, Google Summer of Code is a global program that familiarizes students with open source software development by offering student developers stipends to write code for various open source software projects. Google works with hundreds of open source, free software, and technology-related groups to identify and fund several projects over a three month period. Accepted student participants are paired with a mentor or mentors from participating open source organizations engaged in application development, thus gaining exposure to real-world software development scenarios. The program also generates opportunities for employment in areas related to student participants’ academic pursuits and interests. Conversely, participating organizations are able to identify and recruit talented new developers. Best of all, more open source code is created and released for the use and benefit of the entire open source community. Google Summer of Code is open to all students from any educational background and many of the past participants had never participated in an open-source project before GSoC. Through the years, the program has attracted students from diverse courses of study including computer science and computer engineering as well as fields not directly related to information technology and application programming such as computational biology and mining engineering. Google distributed millions of dollars in stipends to the student participants in a show of support and commitment to the open source movement. Leslie added, “Many countries and organizations understand the importance of the open source movement and welcome our efforts to grow the local open source community. Besides giving back to the community that has provided Google and the entire world with so much useful code, this program is also a great way to discover, inspire and support programming talent for open source development in Thailand." Participating mentoring organizations for the Google Summer of Code 2009 include: The Apache Software Foundation, The Asterisk Project, Berkman Center at Harvard University, Blender Foundation, Chromium, The Codehaus, Drupal, The Electronic Frontier Foundation, Fedora Project, The FreeBSD Project, GNOME, GNU Project, Go OpenOffice, Inkscape, Joomla!, KDE, The Linux Foundation, Mono Project, Moodle, Mozilla Project, MySQL, The NetBSD Project, OpenChange, openSUSE Project, The Perl Foundation, PHP, The Python Software Foundation, Ruby on Rails, Samba, Subversion, Umit, Wikimedia Foundation, The Wine Project, WinLibre, XWiki, and Google.
