Leading the industry with high performance plastic resins for medical devices
SCG Chemicals, Asia Pacific’s leading integrated chemicals company, is strengthening the growth of the High Value-Added (HVA) products sector by pioneering high performance plastic resins for medical devices that can undergo gamma radiation sterilization process, striving to provide superior quality and solutions for its customers, based on its ‘Building Success Together’ business practice.
Mr. Yuttana Jiamtragan, Managing Director, SCG Polyolefins Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of SCG Chemicals, revealed that in reaching toward sustainable leadership in the ASEAN region, SCG Chemicals geared its focus toward the HVA market with an aim to create strong competitive edge by developing high performance products that best meet the needs of both customers and end users. SCG Chemicals’ HVA products are developed based on the SURE principle:
S (Safety) - Safety, in terms of products, the production process and product application, is of utmost importance. SCG Chemicals’ high performance plastic resins for medical devices have been developed to meet international safety standards. In the near future, the company will launch a special grade of high performance plastics for medical devices that can undergo gamma radiation sterilization process, making it the first producer in ASEAN with such product offering.
U (Users Come First) - SCG Chemicals places high priority on end users and convertors. The company strives to produce premium plastic resins that ease the converting process, are ideal for manufacturing high quality products, and ultimately provide end users with benefits.
R (Research and Development) — A lot of emphasis has been placed on the R&D in the HVA product development, which requires advanced skills, thorough understanding and deeper knowledge base throughout the entire process. This results in innovations in the working procedures and products. SCG Chemicals has allocated Baht 370 million for the R&D for HVA in 2010.
E (Excellence) - Excellent quality of the HVA product line is a major attribute that sets it apart from other commodity plastic products.
“HVA business has enjoyed steady growth over the past few years. The line contributed up to 27% of our total sales in 2009. We plan to expand our HVA business to reach 50% of our total income within 2015. Our high performance resins from the HVA product line are converted into these outstanding product categories: flexible packaging, automobile parts, and medical devices.”
The growing aging population in Asia, an increase in people’s awareness of healthy living, the discovery of new diseases and health risks, as well as the fast growing trend of health and wellness tourism in Thailand, have resulted in a constant growth in the medical device manufacturing industry in Thailand.
Yuttana added, “In 2007 the consumption of plastic resins in the medical device manufacturing industry worldwide amounted to 3.2 million tons, 15% or 473,000 tons of which were polypropylene.”
SCG Chemicals is an industry leader in offering a comprehensive range of high performance plastic resins that meet international standards for use in producing medical devices. The company is also in the process of testing and developing a special grade of high performance plastics that can undergo gamma radiation sterilization process. These plastic resins can be used for producing syringe barrels, needle caps, cylindrical test tubes, specimen cups, medical clamps and other transparent medical devices. Such high performance plastic resins have the same superior quality as imported products, while offering lower production costs. It also substantially helps Thailand decrease dependence on imported products. Furthermore, the products support the development of the Thai healthcare industry, help decrease the price of domestic medical devices and ultimately create a better standard of living for Thai people, in regards to better access to healthcare.
Because of lower production costs, SCG Chemicals can offer high performance plastic resins with competitive prices compared to the same products manufactured in other continents. This provides the company with an opportunity to export to several countries where demand for raw materials for medical devices is growing.
“We plan to achieve production volume target of 35,000 tons for polypropylene resins for medical devices for both domestic demands and export distribution by 2015. Such production capacity will make us reach a 30% market share in Thailand,” added Yuttana.
Currently SCG Chemicals exports a variety of plastic resins to over 100 countries worldwide, with 8 sales representative offices located in Burma, Vietnam, Philippines, Indonesia, China (in Shanghai and Guangzhou), Japan and Dubai.
