Bangkok--24 Oct--Image Impact Program Title: In the Wake of the Rainbow Warrior Telecast date: Sunday, October 26, 2008 Telecast Time: 7.00 p.m. (Thai) A one-hour documentary special to mark the 20 year anniversary of the bombing of Greenpeace flagship — the Rainbow Warrior. The bumbling saboteurs completely under-estimated the ‘neighbourhood watch’ mentality and simple resourcefulness of New Zealanders. Rather than derail the protests, this contemptible attack only served to strengthen the resolve and conviction of both Greenpeace and New Zealand — a nation that would soon be the only country in the world to have a nuclear free policy. It was an expensive act of international terrorism against a peaceful country, ill conceived and poorly executed - what was the French government thinking? The time that has elapsed means we may now be able to question people who would not talk about this before. And it is our intention to bring to the audience the elusive French perspective and retell this story…where possible, from both sides. Today a new Rainbow Warrior flies the flag of Greenpeace as the original lies in state on the seabed of New Zealand’s beautiful Matauri Bay. This documentary will re-live this act of state-sponsored terrorism; examine the history leading up to that night; the consequential political push and shove; and reasons for the farcical sentencing of two of the perpetrators. And as the events unfold, we will simultaneously tell the French story through interviews, and closely examine the actions of the French Government, the DGSE and their agents. Our audience will have the opportunity to gain a wider understanding of the events surrounding the bombing, particularly the actions of the French Government. The bombing was a defining moment in the history of New Zealand - our ‘September 11’- and as a result we became, and now remain the only nation with a nuclear free policy on the planet. This status is carried proudly by New Zealanders although it is regularly questioned and derided by politicians. Is this clean green nuclear free stance sustainable or even viable for the future? And just how clean and green are we really? 20 years since that fateful day…the legend of the Rainbow Warrior lives on.
