ตามที่กระทรวงการต่างประเทศได้แจ้งเหตุภัยพิบัติในอินโดนีเซีย ได้แก่ เหตุการณ์ภูเขาไฟเมราปี (Merapi) ที่จังหวัดชวากลาง และแผ่นดินไหวรวมถึงสึนามิที่หมู่เกาะเมนตาไว (Mentawai) จังหวัดสุมาตราตะวันตก เมื่อวันที่ ๒๕-๒๖ ตุลาคม ๒๕๕๓ นั้น
นายธานี ทองภักดี รองอธิบดีกรมสารนิเทศและรองโฆษกกระทรวงการต่างประเทศได้ให้ข้อมูลแก่สื่อมวลชนในเรื่องนี้เพิ่มเติมว่า จากการเกิดภัยพิบัติดังกล่าวของอินโดนีเซียในครั้งนี้ เมื่อวันที่ ๒๗ ตุลาคม ๒๕๕๓ นายอภิสิทธิ์ เวชชาชีวะ นายกรัฐมนตรี ได้มีสารแสดงความเสียใจต่อความสูญเสียและความเสียหายที่เกิดขึ้นจากเหตุการณ์ภัยพิบัติไปถึงนายซูซิโล บัมบัง ยูโดโยโน (Mr. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono) ประธานาธิบดีอินโดนีเซีย และเมื่อวันที่ ๒๘ ตุลาคม ๒๕๕๓ นายกษิต ภิรมย์ รัฐมนตรีว่าการกระทรวงการต่างประเทศ ได้มีสารแสดงความเสียใจไปยังนายราเดน มาร์ตี เอ็ม นาตาเลกาวา (Mr. Raden Marty M. Natalegawa) รัฐมนตรีว่าการกระทรวงการต่างประเทศของอินโดนีเซีย โดยได้แสดงความประสงค์ให้ความช่วยเหลือจำนวน ๑ แสนดอลลาร์สหรัฐฯ ในนามของรัฐบาลและประชาชนไทยและย้ำความสำคัญของความร่วมมือในการตอบสนองต่อภัยพิบัติในภูมิภาค ดังนี้

Excellency,
I am deeply saddened upon learning about the tragic loss of life and property caused by the Earthquake-triggered tsunami in the area of Mentawai Islands and the Merapi volcano eruption in Central Java during the past few days.
On behalf of the Government and the people of the Kingdom of Thailand, I wish to express my deepest sympathy and sincere condolences to the families and friends of the victims. I share with the people of Indonesia their grief. Kindly be assured that the Government of the Kingdom of Thailand stands ready to provide support and assistance to Indonesia through close coordination between our authorities concerned.

2. สารแสดงความเสียใจจากรัฐมนตรีว่าการกระทรวงการต่างประเทศถึงรัฐมนตรีว่าการกระทรวงการต่างประเทศของอินโดนีเซีย
Dear Marty,
I wish to convey my deepest condolences for the loss of lives of the Indonesian people as well as damages to property from the recent volcano eruption on Java and the tsunami which hit the Mentawai Islands on 26 October 2010 and through you, to extend these condolences to families of the victims of these devastating disasters. In this hour of need, the people and the Government of the Kingdom of Thailand are with you as Indonesia undertakes the process of relief and recovery.
In this connection, I wish to, on behalf of the people and the Government of the Kingdom of Thailand, provide an initial relief assistance in the amount of USD 100,000 in support of Indonesia’s relief and recovery efforts. We are also coordinating with Thai agencies as well as private sector and civil society to explore further assistance.
This sad episode underscores the importance of having effective regional response to disasters in the region. Therefore, I wish to take this opportunity to reaffirm to you our support for the development of effective disaster management arrangements within ASEAN, which would include timely and early response and an important role for the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance in Disaster Management (AHA) in Jakarta in these arrangements.

นอกจากนี้ นายธานีฯ ได้แจ้งเตือนประชาชนผ่านสื่อมวลชนว่า จากเหตุการณ์การระเบิดของภูเขาไฟเมราปี ซึ่งอยู่ใกล้กับจังหวัดยอกยาการ์ตา อันเป็นที่ตั้งของเจดีย์บุโรพุทโธอันเป็นสถานที่ท่องเที่ยวยอดนิยมของชาวไทยนั้น กระทรวงการต่างประเทศและสถานเอกอัครราชทูต ณ กรุงจาการ์ตา มีความห่วงใยนักท่องเที่ยวชาวไทยที่ประสงค์จะไปท่องเที่ยวเมืองยอกยาการ์ตาในช่วงนี้ โดยขอให้ใช้ดุลยพินิจก่อนตัดสินใจเดินทางและหากไม่มีความจำเป็นเร่งด่วนควรพิจารณาเลื่อนกำหนดการเดินทางออกไปก่อนจนกว่าสถานการณ์การระเบิดของภูเขาไฟจะสงบลง เนื่องจากเจดีย์บุโรพุทโธอยู่ห่างจากภูเขาไฟเมราปีเพียง 35 กิโลเมตรเท่านั้น
